Typical Causes of Gout

Below are a list of the typical causes of gout.  If you fit into one or more of these causes then you are at an increased risk of receiving gout.  If you think you might have gout go to your family doctor and ask for a blood test to check your uric acid levels.  If your uric acid levels are high, you have a high likely hood of having gout.

Hereditary and Family History

If someone in your family had gout then the you are at a much higher risk of getting gout yourself.  Around 18% of gout sufferers have some sort of family history of gout. 
 

Over Consumption of High Purine Foods

People who have a high red meat or seafood diet can be at high risk of developing gout..  If you eat a lot of purine rich foods you are at higher risk of suffering from gout.  See the list of high purine foods.

Obese or Overweight

Obesity or overweight is a typical reason why a lot of people suffer from joint pains The reason for this is when a person is obese, there would be a lot more tissues available for the breakdown of purine into uric acid, this can lead to the excess production of uric acid and increase the likely hood of getting gout.
 

Over Consumption of Alcohol

Those who consume alcohol frequently and excessively are prone to the development of gout. This is because alcohol becomes a hindrance for the removal of uric acid from the body, which leads to gout.
 

Enzyme Defect

Defect in an enzyme that prevents the body from breaking down purines results in gout. This condition is especially seen in those, who inherit this disease from their elderly family members.  This partially ties in with family history since this enzyme defect can be handed down.
 

Medications

Consumption of certain medicines also results in high levels of uric acid in the body fluids.  By taking certain medications along with along with any of these other causes of gout can make you at higher risk of experiencing gout.
 

High Blood Pressure

Since high blood pressure is linked to a higher level of uric acid, having a high blood pressure puts you at greater risk to suffering from gout attacks.  This is one of the reasons why a lot of  people that have high blood pressure often suffer from inflamation in their joints.

 

Foods That Cause Gout

It’s important to know that high purine foods cause your body to create more uric acid in your body.  With this information you can avoid foods eating extremely high purine and to eat certain foods in moderation.

Below is a list of food and drink to avoid eating at all (extremely high in purine), food that you should eat a little of (high in purine), food that you can eat in moderation (moderately high in purine), and foods that are fine to eat (low in purine).

Foods Extremely High in Purine (avoid eating/drinking at all):

  • Beer
  • Alcoholic Beverages
  • Anchovies
  • Yeast
  • Herring
  • Mussels
  • Smelt
  • Sardines
  • Organ Meat
    • Liver
    • Kidneys
    • Sweetbreads
    • Hearts

Foods High in Purine (eat only a little):

  • Anchovies
  • Grouse
  • Mutton
  • Veal
  • Bacon
  • Liver
  • Salmon
  • Turkey
  • Kidneys
  • Partridge
  • Trout
  • Goose
  • Haddock
  • Pheasant
  • Scallops
  • Shrimp
  • Lobster

Moderately high in purine (eat in moderation)

  • Beef
  • Pork
  • Chicken
  • Tuna
  • Ham
  • Cold Cuts
  • Hot Dogs

Vegetables high in purine (eat in moderation)

  • Peas
  • Beans
  • Mushrooms
  • Cauliflower
  • Spinach
  • Asparagus

Foods Low in Purine (Foods to eat more of):

  • Water (Important: 7 cups a day)
  • Whole Grains
  • Fruits
    • Cherries
    • Dark Berries
  • Vegetables (Except in list above)
    • Celery
  • Dairy
    • Cheese
    • Milk
  • Foods low in protein
